Itasa has started production in its new plant located in Querétaro. The new plant serves the American market and covers the segments including labels, tapes, medical, hygiene, automotive and composite. With the opening of the new facility, ITASA has expanded its installed capacity, in excess of 1,2 billion sqm.

New Fiber-based ready meal trays from Huhtamaki to replace black plastic

Waitrose & Partners launched the new fiber-based trays called Fresh, which are certified for home composting and can be recycled. This new product is used for Italian ready meals, and suited for both microwave and regular ovens. Huhtamaki is the manufacturer.

Sappi has improved barrier properties of its packaging papers

Sappi has optimised Guard M and Guard MS papers with an integrated mineral oil barrier. Guard M now have a high grease barrier Kit 11, while Guard MS has Kit 7. “The integrated mineral oil barrier prevents MOSH and MOAH compounds from penetrating into the packaged goods” explained by René Köhler, Head of Business Development Packaging and Speciality Papers at Sappi.

Dow and Menshen have jointly annouced a sustainable sealing technology for spouted pouches

The new technology enables the production of spouted pouches made of mono-material films, which the companies believe will “address the recycling criteria for flexible packaging and can help brands meet their sustainability packaging goals”.  According to Sarah De La Mare, business development officer at Menshen, they are currently working on ensuring that this technology can be integrated into new and existing spouted pouch making lines.

Malaysia to return plastic waste to developed countries

Yeo Bee Yin, Malaysian environment minister, revealed that a UK recycling company exported more than 50,000 metric tons of plastic waste in about 1,000 containers to Malaysia over the past two years. Now Malaysia is to return around 3,000 metric tonnes of non-recyclable plastic waste to countries including the UK, US, Canada and Australia.

Avery Dennison introduces facestock made from rPE (recycled polyethylene)

The labelling industry’s first-ever facestock made from recycled polyethylene (rPE) has been introduced by Avery Dennison. Successful print and dispensing trials are now complete. Recycled PE contains more impurities than virgin PE film, which gives the film a unique aesthetic, without compromising printing, dispensing or application.
