In-Mold decoration (IMD) as a technology was developed over 20 years ago. When first launched is was adopted mainly in the low specification appliance markets and by early 2010s the benefits of the technique had been realised in higher specification applications such as consumer electronics and the automotive industry. These sectors are by far still the main markets where IMD is used. Today, IMD however is being used in other market sectors in lower volumes but growing, e.g. in the medical and other industrial sectors.

The IMD market provides opportunities for growth across the supply chain and at different rates in different regions of the world for different applications. It is evident that there has been and continues to be a shift in demand to the Far East.
